This book is a reworking and extension of the 'critical biography' of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe published by Franz Schulze in 1985 (and translated into Spanish in 1986), which was the first complete study of this master of modern architecture. With the incorporation as co-author of Edward Windhorst, this second edition, fully revised, presents new research and relies on the best recent work of scholars and critics, both German and North American.

The authors describe the professional career of Mies from its incorporation to the modern avant-garde, with very innovative works but of modest scale, until its second stage in the United States, where it created a new architectural language of an 'objective' structural expression. Among the contributions of this new edition is the transcript of the lawsuit on the Farnsworth house, in the early 1950s, which reveals for the first time the facts of the confrontation between Mies and her client. The text offers new data on Mies' relationships with women, including the nature and breakup of her marriage to the wealthy Ada Bruhn, her close professional and personal ties with designer Lilly Reich, and new details taken from interviews with her American companion, Lora Marx.

This edition also gives the word to dozens of architects who met and worked with Mies, largely thanks to the exceptional collection of 'oral history' of the architecture department of the Art Institute of Chicago. This complete biography tells the fascinating story of how Mies (and his students and followers) created some of the most significant buildings of the 20th century.

This Spanish edition has a prologue by Professor Juan Calatrava, Professor of Architectural Composition at the School of Architecture of the University of Granada.
