In the city of Montevideo, on July 24 and 25, 1998, in the Palace of the Municipality, whose Intendant acts as host, meets, in first session, the Jury that has to fail the Mies van der Rohe Award for Architecture Latin American
Attending the architects members of the same, chaired by D. Luiz Paulo Conde, Prefeito of the city of Rio de Janeiro, and composed by D. Mariano Arana, Mayor of the city of Montevideo; Ms. Silvia Arango, from Bogotá; D. Terence Riley, from the Museum of Modern Art in New York; D. Ignasi de Solà-Morales, from Barcelona; Mrs. Sara Topelson de Grinberg, President of the International Union of Architects, of Mexico City; all of them with a vote, as well as Mr. Lluís Hortet, Director of the Fundació Mies van der Rohe of Barcelona, who acts as secretary.
Based on an extensive graphic and photographic documentation of each and every one of the 77 selected projects, the Jury examines the proposals made by the Committee of Experts of different Latin American countries appointed for that purpose, and those of the members of the Jury, deciding to give accepted all the 77 proposals.
The Jury, having examined each and every one of the projects and after successive analyzes and debates for the establishment of criteria of excellence, decides to determine the Finalists of the Prize, whose works will be part of the publication and possible exhibitions, which will be dealt with the Fundació Mies van der Rohe of Barcelona, organizer of the Prize.
They also agree to gather information from some of these finalist projects, as well as the Jury members to document and visit, as far as possible, the largest number of selected works. The next decisive meeting will take place in Rio de Janeiro on September 10 and 11, 1998. The Jury also agrees to publicize the aforementioned list of Finalists, which is outlined in the attached document.

Ignasi de Solà-Morales, from Barcelona; Mr. Fernando Távora, from Porto; Mrs. Sara Topelson de Grinberg, President of the International Union of Architects, of Mexico City; all of them with a vote, as well as Mr. Lluís Hortet, Director of the Fundació Mies van der Rohe, who acts as Secretary.
In continuous sessions of morning and afternoon, after viewing new information collected from the 24 finalist projects, the jury, by a process of successive selection arrives, by majority, to the decision to proclaim 1st Prize Mies van der Rohe of Latin American Architecture the Building of Multiple and Complementary Uses for TELEVISA, by the architects Enrique Norten and Bernardo Gómez-Pimienta.
The Jury values the unitary solution to a complex program; the attentive urban implantation; the innovative attitude, both technological and formal; the ability to modalize with own records and proposals a particular situation in a city and in a specific cultural moment.
The Jury also agrees to express its satisfaction for the set of works submitted to the contest and, in particular for the representative and exemplary character that the collection of finalists will bring, both the richness and vitality of the new Latin American architecture and the happy competition and articulated interrelation of the different generations of architects present in this selection of finalists.
Likewise, the Jury agrees to make public these results by setting the award ceremony in Oporto, on October 16, in a ceremony that will be part of the Summit of Ibero-American Heads of State and Government, which will take place, in this city, on the same dates.
