The Bauhaus was the most influential school of modern art of the 20th century, one whose approach to teaching and understanding the relationship of art with society and technology had a great impact both in Europe and in the United States long after it will close. It was shaped by the trends of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, such as the Arts and Crafts movement, which sought to level the distinction between fine arts and applied arts, and bring together creativity and manufacturing. In the mid-1920s the Bauhaus gave way to an emphasis on the union of art and industrial design, and it was this that ultimately turned out to be its most original and important achievement.

The school is also famous for its faculty, which includes the artists Wassily Kandinsky, Josef Albers, László Moholy-Nagy, Paul Klee and Johannes Itten, the architects Walter Gropius and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, and the designer Marcel Breuer.
