Con la llegada de la República de Weimar, la posición jurídica de las mujeres se vio reforzada: podían votar, podían estudiar sin limitación alguna y además eran mayoría. Debido a la pérdida por la guerra precedente de muchos hombres, existía un excedente de unos dos millones de mujeres en edad matrimonial. Este superávit femenino las forzaba a asumir el hecho de llenar de contenido su vida ya que era más que probable que no pudiesen casarse nunca.

Su tesón unido al adiestramiento que practicaron en las escuelas en las que entraron para formarse, demostraron que ellas tenían capacidad suficiente para desarrollar cualquier actividad intelectual por compleja que esta fuera. Estas mujeres luchadoras, como las llamaría Ida A.R.Wylie, nunca unas "mujercitas corrientes", lograron culminar en la Bauhaus unos estudios altamente cualificados. Se convirtieron en ingenieras industriales y arquitectas.

Se muestra en el libro el lado menos conocido de la escuela más famosa: el trabajo de las arquitectas que surgieron de la Bauhaus.
