Hilberseimer and Mies

Xavier Llobet's thesis undertakes a global analysis of the joint work of Mies van der Rohe and Ludwig Hilberseimer and raises a deep debate on the theories of the latter. It presents an innovative and exceptionally stimulating approach, pushing the limits of historical analysis and moving into the debate on the current applicability of the urban ideas of Hilberseimer and Mies.

The value of this volume lies in several aspects, such as its success in integrating the ideas of Mies and Hilberseimer, often divided into the separate fields of architecture and urban planning. However, Llobet observes that the whole is greater than the sum of the parts and provides the keys to understand it. Analyzing Mies and Hilberseimer's work from a broad perspective, encompassing the historical, the economic and the cultural, makes their projects in the field of urban planning and transformation even more intelligible.
